Conservation Tips
There are a number of things you can do around your home to increase water efficiency and decrease unnecessary waste.
Ways to Save Indoors
- Fix leaky toilets, faucets and pipes. This could save an average of 25 gallons per day.
- Upgrade to water-efficient toilets and possibly save more than 700 gallons per month.
- Install low-flow shower heads. This could save 500 to 800 gallons per month.
- Limit showers to five minutes. This may save up to 1,000 gallons per month.
- Turn off water while you brush your teeth or shave. You’ll possibly save four gallons a minute.
- If washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running. You could save 200 to 500 gallons a month.
- Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when you have a full load.
Ways to Save Outdoors
- Follow the District’s landscape irrigation rule.
- Only water your landscape when it is actually needed. You can tell this by walking across your lawn. If you leave footprints, it’s time to water.
- Implement Florida Friendly Landscaping™ and reduce the need for irrigation.
- Use sprinklers with automatic timers, preferably those equipped with rain sensors.
- Equip hoses with automatic shutoff nozzles for car washing, hand watering, etc.
- Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways, sidewalks, and decks.
- Wash your car on the grass. This will also water the lawn and prevent wasteful runoff.
