SRWMD launches new website aimed at easing recreational request process

LIVE OAK, FLA., FEBRUARY 13, 2025 – In an effort to increase the ease of access to special activities on District lands, the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) has launched an online Special Use Authorization (SUA) website.

SUAs are required for some activities on District lands. This includes camping, ATV use, and certain nighttime activities, like fishing, frogging, or raccoon hunting. For those activities, residents and visitors are required to apply for an SUA through the District.

The new website – https://sua.mysuwanneeriver.com/ – allows users easier access to the application form and eliminates the need to call or visit the District to request one. Users can visit the site, find the tract or activity they’re interested in, and apply with a few mouse clicks. Users are required to create an account where their previous SUA requests can be found and to eliminate the need to input personal information every time.

Some SUAs will be approved immediately, while others will be approved by District staff at their earliest convenience.

“We encourage the use of our publicly owned District lands, and we want to make it easy for residents and visitors to enjoy activities on them,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “Our Online SUA website provides all this information in one place and helps reduce the time it takes for users to receive an SUA. And while you’re on the website, you may find a few new tracts you want to explore in the future.”

The District owns more than 160,000 acres in North Florida, and acquires land for flood control, water quality protection, water supply enhancement, and natural resource conservation. However, more than 95 percent of these lands are open 365 days a year for public recreational activities.

The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
