Hall of Fame

LIVE OAK, FLA., AUGUST 8, 2023 – Hugh Thomas, executive director of the Suwannee River Water Management District (District), has been inducted into the National Association of Conservation Districts Southeast Region Conservation Hall of Fame.

The Southeast Region Conservation Hall of Fame annually recognizes and honors individuals from the Southeast Region who have had a significant impact or influence on conservation practice or partnerships at the local, state, territory, regional, or national levels. Inductees selected by their state or territory associations are inducted into the Southeast Region Conservation Hall of Fame at the annual Southeast Region Meeting

Thomas represented Florida as one of 10 inductees from the Southeast Region recognized at the annual meeting on Monday in Savannah, Ga.

“Conservation of our region’s natural areas not only protects our water and land resources, but also protects the culture, economic viability, and aesthetics of our area. I’m proud to have spent much of my career conserving resources that support our communities and will benefit my grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” said Thomas. “To be recognized for work I love and value is a great honor and I’m thankful to be inducted into the Southeast Region Conservation Hall of Fame.

Thomas has served as the executive director of the District since 2017, working as a project manager in the Office of Agricultural and Environmental Projects before becoming executive director. Prior to working with the District, he was employed with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Office of Agriculture Water Policy as Environmental Administrator for North Florida. Thomas worked for FDACS for 14 years and prior to that worked as an environmental consultant.

The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. The District holds true to the belief of water for nature, water for people. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
