LIVE OAK, FLA., JUNE 8, 2022 – Warm weather, blue skies, and sunshine can mean only one thing – summer is here, and the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) invites you to join the celebration of Great Outdoors Month, taking place through the end of June.
As families begin embarking on summer activities, June is the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of Natural Florida. To honor Florida’s natural resources and recreational opportunities, Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a proclamation declaring June as Great Outdoors Month in the state of Florida.
Great Outdoors Month is celebrated to spotlight not only the beauty of Florida, but also the health and economic benefits provided by the recreational activities at District lands, springs, rivers, and state parks.
“North Florida is home to an abundance of recreational activities that can be enjoyed all summer long,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “My hope is that the last few years have shown us all the importance of wild, natural spaces and their impact on our physical, mental, and emotional health. Public lands are an important feature of the District's mission and believe strongly in their benefit to the public.”
From swimming in clear, natural springs and ambling rivers to hiking or horseback riding through peaceful forests, North Florida offers various opportunities to connect with nature and explore the outdoors. Recreational opportunities afforded to residents and visitors through District-owned lands can be found at www.MySuwanneeRiver.com.
The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. The District holds true to the belief of water for nature, water for people. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
