Since our first purchase under the Save Our Rivers program in 1983, the District has acquired river floodplains, freshwater springs, head water wetlands, pristine bottom land hardwood forests, and associated uplands. Emphasis is placed on acquiring lands most important to the protection of rivers, wetlands, floodplains, ecosystems, freshwater springs, and recharge areas.
Conservation lands acquired by the District are managed to meet multiple-use objectives including protection of water resources, restoration of altered lands, preservation of existing natural communities, protection of rare and endangered species, public use, and production of renewable resources.
District lands are open to the public every day of the year during daylight hours. Opportunities are provided for passive recreational activities, outdoor education programs, and formal research projects.
